- Quelle est l’histoire du journal L’Humanité avec l’affaire Maurice Audin ? Maurice Audin était militant communiste, lecteur fidèle de L’Humanité. Avec son arrestation, le journal se saisit de l’affaire dès le 15 juin 1957. Ce qui lui vaut d’être censuré à plusieurs reprises par les autorités françaises. Le 30 juin, L’Humanité publie la plainte pour torture adressée au procureur général d’Alger par Henri Alleg, directeur du quotidien Alger Républicain, interdit depuis septembre 1955. Alleg est alors interné au camp de Lodi. L’article est en fait une première version de ce que sera son livre La Question (1958). Il était précédé d’une présentation de Léon Feix sous forme de lettre ouverte au garde des Sceaux, Maurice Bourgès-Maunoury. «Qu’est devenu Maurice Audin», demande-t-il, en évoquant aussi les assassinats de maître Ali Boumendjel, de Raymonde Peschard et de Larbi Ben M’hidi, ainsi que le sort des condamnés à mort. «Il n’y a jamais eu en Algérie autant de tortures, de ‘disparitions’, d’exécutions sommaires», dénonce Léon Feix. Cette édition de L’Humanité a été saisie, mais les militants avaient eu le temps d’en sauver de nombreux exemplaires pour les diffuser clandestinement. Jusqu’en 1962, de nombreux articles, enquêtes, appels d’intellectuels évoquant l’affaire Audin sont frappés de censure. Après l’indépendance de l’Algérie, L’Humanité n’a jamais tourné la page, et a toujours donné écho à l’exigence de vérité et de justice de Josette Audin, la veuve de Maurice Audin. En particulier au début des années 2000, lorsque le témoignage de Louisette Ighilahriz (Le Monde, 20 juin 2000, ndlr) a relancé le débat sur les atroces pratiques de l’armée française en Algérie. Tout récemment, nous avons publié le témoignage d’un ancien appelé, qui pense avoir été enrôlé pour inhumer la dépouille de Maurice Audin. L’Humanité continue de porter, aujourd’hui, l’exigence de reconnaissance de la torture comme crime d’Etat. Pour Maurice Audin, mais aussi pour les milliers d’Algériens «disparus» après être passés entre les mains des tortionnaires. - Les autres médias français et l’opinion publique ne s’y intéressent pas vraiment. Pourquoi, à votre avis ? L’Humanité, par son histoire, par ses engagements anticolonialistes, entretient un lien particulier, politique et affectif, avec Maurice Audin. Cette mémoire est la nôtre. Mais d’autres médias s’intéressent à l’affaire. Nos publications sur le sujet sont très relayées par nos confrères de la presse écrite et même audiovisuelle, en France comme en Algérie. Par ailleurs, c’est Nathalie Funès, une journaliste du Nouvel Observateur, qui a déterré aux Etats-Unis, dans les archives du colonel Godard, un mémoire désignant le sous-lieutenant Gérard Garcet, un adjoint du général Massu, comme l’auteur du crime. - Comment contribuez-vous concrètement, en tant que journalistes, à faire avancer ce dossier ? Nous continuons d’enquêter, d’explorer des archives, d’interroger des protagonistes. En publiant régulièrement des articles, nous espérons susciter encore des témoignages et contribuer à faire remonter d’éventuels documents à la surface. Et puis, il y a le volet politique. L’Etat français doit lever le secret-défense sur tous les documents qui pourraient contribuer à la manifestation de la vérité sur l’affaire Audin. La plupart des tortionnaires et commanditaires sont morts et le triple verrou des lois d’amnistie a empêché leur traduction en justice. Mais la reconnaissance du crime d’Etat serait, nous en sommes convaincus, un acte de réparation. C’est le sens de notre lettre ouverte à Emmanuel Macron. - Chaque année, toute votre rédaction se mobilise pour demander au gouvernement français de reconnaître ce crime d’Etat. Emmanuel Macron le fera-t-il cette fois-ci ? Jusqu’ici, il s’est refusé à faire ce geste. Il prétend que la reconnaissance du crime d’État est impossible tant que la vérité historique n’est pas établie. C’est un argument complètement fallacieux. Depuis l’enquête de Pierre Vidal-Naquet, tous les historiens arrivent à la même conclusion : Maurice Audin a été assassiné par l’armée française en raison de son engagement pour l’indépendance de l’Algérie. L’usage de la torture, à cette époque, n’était pas le fruit de dérives individuelles ; c’était un système, une politique délibérée. Avec l’aval du pouvoir politique, l’institution militaire a érigé la torture, les disparitions forcées, les exécutions extrajudiciaires en armes de terreur et de répression de masse. Les tortionnaires français qui ont mis au point ces ignobles méthodes de «contre-insurrection» les ont d’ailleurs exportées, vers l’Amérique latine par exemple. Pour tourner cette sombre page de l’histoire de France, on ne peut pas se résoudre à l’oubli, bien au contraire. Il a fallu attendre 1999 pour que les députés français désignent enfin par le mot «guerre» ce qui s’est passé en Algérie entre 1954 et 1962. Auparavant, il s’agissait officiellement de simples «événements». Il est temps, désormais, que la vérité soit dite à propos des crimes commis par l’armée française en Algérie : ce sont des crimes d’Etat, ils doivent être reconnus comme tels. La France doit rompre avec cette mémoire officielle trouée, gangrenée par le déni. C’est la condition d’une mémoire apaisée, en France même, mais aussi entre les deux rives de la Méditerranée.
